About Us Honey Gem Grevillea

Tawny Frogmouth Waru is the name of our property which is located approximately 80km south west of Sydney in the Wollondilly Shire. The name Waru was derived from a term used in Permaculture meaning `where all living organisms operate independently and interdependently, all benefiting from each other and all helping each other`. However it is also a Pitjantjatjara word meaning `Fire` (Pitjantjatjara are an Aboriginal people from Central Australia) and also a Peruvian word for a type of agricultural technique that used a combination of raised beds and irrigation channels.

Waru Wildlife Jewellery is a small family run business created in order to support the Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Service (commonly referred to as Sydney Wildlife or SMWS). Sydney Wildlife is a volunteer organization that is dedicated to caring for Sydney`s sick, injured or orphaned native fauna. My wife and I have been members of Sydney Wildlife since 1997. (SMWS website)

Initially the idea behind the jewellery making was to get our children to make gifts for their friends birthdays, etc, to add a personal touch to the gift and also to help develop and improve their own fine motor skills. As my wife searched for new charms for the boys gifts she came across an Australian based company that cast pewter charms. Being an Australian company they had a good range of Australian animals available and so the idea of making and selling jewellery and donating the proceeds to Sydney Wildlife was born.

Local Species Grevillea
Our property is 46 acres consisting of mostly native Eucalypt forest. Some of the area had been cleared by the previous owners but we are slowly allowing the bushland to naturally regenerate. The Sydney Regum (Angophora costata), Spotted Gum (Eucalyptus maculata) and Turpentine (Syncarpia glomulifera) make up the majority of larger trees on the property, however we have many other endemic Grevillea, Banksia, Casuarina, Melaleuca and Leptospermum species. We have also found 3 species of native Orchids growing on the property.

Wild Waratahs (Telopea speciosissima)

One of the more spectacular flowering plants growing naturally on the property is the New South Wales Waratah (Telopea speciosissima), as well as the iconic White Waratah which is found only in the local Wollondilly Shire.

In the creek gullies, that form part of our boundary, there are parts of temporate rainforest as well as patches of grassland in the more open areas. The grassland contains such native grasses as Kangaroo Grass (Themeda triandra), Barded-wire Grass (Cymbopogon refractus) and the Kangaroo Tail Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea semiplana).

Gang gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum) We are extremely lucky to have a wide variety of bird species breeding on the property, with some species being locally under threat, such as the Gang Gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum), and even some endangered species, such as the Glossy Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami). There are a pair of Glossy Blacks that have bred on our property annually for several years.

The Eastern (Platycercus eximius) and Crimson (Platycercus elegans) Rosellas are both common, as is the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus funereus).

The stunning King Parrot (Alisterus scapularis) is also relatively common with several pairs breeding annually

Several species of native finches, quail, pidgeons, doves, honeyeaters, Kingfishers and Wattlebirds can be found frequenting our gardens or in the forests which make for a wonderful experience for avid and novice bird watchers alike.

We are currently creating a list of all of the species of birds, mammals an reptiles that can be found on the property whicn can be found on the Meet the Locals page or by selecting the following. (Meet the Locals)

Most importantly, living on Waru has provided a great environment to raise our 3 boys in and to show them the true beauty of, and respect for, our native flora and fauna. King Parrot (Alisterus scapularis)

Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris)
